2023 - 6 Months of Books!

As I’m a quest for more stillness in my life, I have been finding myself stocking up on books at the library! Most of these are non-fiction, and I thought it would be fun to share what I’ve enjoyed so far this year! How do I have time to read with two small children, you may ask? Great question. I read while they calm down at bedtime; when I need breaks; in waiting rooms or in parent pick-up line. I try to grab a book instead of doom scrolling! And then I get sucked in and can’t put it down - iykyk.

Get yourself a library card if this resonates! Not to mention, borrowing books saves you from excess clutter. :) :)

TEN NON-FICTION BOOKS of 2023

An aside: I gather a lot of my book rec’s from friends or influencers on IG, as well as grabbing books that catch my eye in the “Recently Published” section of the library. I make a list in a notebook (or the Notes app would work too!) to keep track of what I want to re-read — and these are the ones I loved! And likely will re-read. :)

  1. Animal. Vegetable. Miracle. - Barbara Kingsolver. Published in 2007, it’s really cool to read about their family’s local food movement, and how they had a garden/chickens/turkeys. SOO well written - 100% recommend. She includes a lot of history and mini-essays from her daughter and husband as well. Lots of recipes and great tips for storing food.

  2. The Anatomy of Anxiety - Dr. Ellen Vora. Published 2022. Really goes in-depth on topics for what contributes to giving people anxiety. Written by a doctor - an easy read yet just enough science to persuade me! This one is going on my re-read list.

  3. Create Anyway - Ashlee Gadd. Published 2023. Very inspiring with beautiful pictures, would make a great gift for moms of any age, but most especially new moms!

  4. Live, Learn, Love Well - Emma Lovewell. Of Peloton fame, Emma writes about her childhood history as well as how she got to Peloton. A light, inspirational read! She’s one of my faves so I had to check this one out.

  5. We Are Your Children Too - Pearson. Published 2023. This (YA) book was incredibly eye-opening for not having lived through this crucial time in our country’s racial history. Takes place in Virginia. Highly encourage reading!

  6. Find Your Unicorn Space - Eve Rodsky. Published 2021. By the author of Fair Play, it describes the importance of finding something outside of work, family, friends that is yours! A must for anyone who feels stuck or just wants to maximize their quality of life! Fun read.

  7. Stillness is the Key - Ryan Holiday. Published 2019. A quick read for great inspiration on how to slow down in this fast paced world. Lots of great insights, and will be on my January re-reading list for sure.

  8. The Shift: Change Your Perspective, Not Yourself - Tinx. I was influenced and saw this at the library. A must read for anyone dating! Also has great perspectives on relationships in general, as well as lots of her personal anecdotes.

  9. The Portfolio Life - Christina Wallace. Published 2023. Another random grab at the library! This can help you see how your work life should be diversified, much like an investment portfolio. I thought she had some new perspectives and it was a fun read!

  10. Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? - Alyssa Mastromonaco. Published 2017. I picked this up at a used bookstore, and it was a really good read! I love any books about the Obama administration, and her’s was no exception. Loved the behind the scenes and learning WTH a Chief of Staff does!

Another aside — I felt like including the publish date of each book is in helpful in our pre- and post- COVID culture. It’s fascinating to see the differences in books!

RECENT SHOPPING FINDS

  1. Cheese grater. This is the best thing I’ve been influenced to by from Tiktok. If you struggle grating fresh cheese, this does it in seconds. AMAZING find.

  2. Tiny Easel products! She’s a Maryland based mom that started such a cool company. I’ve bought several, and am going to start giving as gifts too! Definitely check out her website and follow on social media.

  3. Rotating Owl - OMG. I’m having the worst luck this year with my garden. This guy seems to be keeping birds away from my raspberries (but not really deterring the groundhogs!).

  4. Car Tissue Holder - I think influenced again by Julia at Lemonstripes.com for this one! Pretty self-explanatory but as I always seem to need to give the kids a tissue whilst driving, nice to have something that fits in the cup holder!
